WHY YOUR TOWN NEED BINS & DRIVES FOR CLOTHING RECYCLING

Dear xyz town,

Towns spend hundreds of thousands of dollars annually in tipping fees when their citizens throw their clothes in the trash. An estimated 81 lbs per person are going to the trash (SMART). This is only increasing. Clothes and shoes are one of the largest growing waste streams in the world (A tipping point: the Canadian textile diversion industry)  Only about 14.2% of clothes and shoes in the US are currently reused and recycled (EPA). Most people don’t think of clothes as a recyclable objects but they should.

Unlike plastics and other traditional recycling markets which are tightening and collapsing, clothing recycling bins and drives provide added value back to town recycling programs, including:

• Reducing town trash tipping fees

• Shrinking the town’s carbon and wastewater footprint

• Receiving environmental credits from state and local agencies

• Reducing expenses for recycling events

• Fundraising for clothes collected

• Creating domestic jobs
